Pawar to visit PAU on Nov 20 to discuss growth of agriculture
Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar will meet senior officers of the Central and state governments on November 20 at the Punjab Agriculture University to discuss strategy for the development and growth of agriculture related avocations for its speedy diversification.
This was stated by Punjab Animal Husbandry Minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur at a media conference held here today.
Mr Phillaur said to take out the farming community from the rotational wheat and rice crop circle, it had become pertinent to encourage the community for diversification for which they have to be encouraged to adopt the agriculture related profession of dairying, animal husbandry, fishery and piggery.
The minister said the state government had chalked out a programme to hold district and national level competitions of healthy cattleheads and milking. These competitions will be held in all the 22 district headquarters from November 15 to December 21.
The winners will be awarded certificates and a cash of Rs one lakh each.
Mr Phillaur said a sum of Rs 61.36 crore would be spent on the renovation of the buildings of animal husbandry hospitals situated in 23 tehsils, 62 blocks and 110 villages whereas a sum of Rs 20 crore will be spent on the renovation of 750 buildings of hospitals and dispensaries across the state.
He said to improve dairying in the state, the state government imported semen for 4.25 lakh cows during the past three years and this semen was supplied to the farmers and dairy owners at half rates.
He said the government was importing another 50, 000 dose of sexed semen to have better species to increase milk production in the state. He said the government had planned to set up 200 goat units for which a subsidy of Rs 85,000 will be provided as subsidy while 100 piggery sheds will be set up with a subsidy of Rs 1.70 lakh per unit.
He said by adopting agriculture related profession, the farming community would see a great and surprising change in their social life besides having a strong financial base.
