Punjab hold India 3-3 in exhibition hockey match
Giving a spirited display, Punjab held star-studded Indian team by sharing six goals in the second exhibition hockey match at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar today Both teams exhibited good hockey.
In the first half of the game the Indian boys dominated while the second half belonged to the Punjab boys. In the 12th minute of the play Youvraj Valmiki opend the account for Indian team by scoring a field goal (1-0). In the 25th minute S K Uthapa consolidated it (2-0). At half time Indian XI were leading by 2-0. Two minutes after resumption, Indian captain Sardar singh scored a field goal to increase the tally to 3-0.
Depite trailing by three goals, the Punjab boys were not disheartened and reorganized their game. Former Indian captain Rajpal Singh, now leading Punjab, and Gurbaj Singh played good game. In the 47th minute Harpreet Singh Nagra of Punjab converted a penalty stroke for his team to reduce the margin (1-3). In the 55th minute Karamjit singh of Punjab scored the field goal from a measured pass of Rajpal Singh (2-3). In the 60th minute Karamjit Singh scored the equalizer for Punjab (3-3).
Punjab maintained their pressure but failed to capitalize on the more chances which came their way. On the other hand the Indian wasted three penalty corners, as Dharamvir Singh was not able to roll the ball properly on all three occasions.
Former Indian captain and Hockey Punjab general secretary Pargat Singh, who is MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment was the chief guest. On this occasion the Indian team chief coach Micheal Nobbs said "we faced tough fight from the Punjab boys. Punjab have a very good culture of hockey. In future we need more matches in Punjab."
