District rural police cracked a six-member gang involved in theft of transformers.
SSP Yurinder Singh said the police had arrested all the six members of the gang and recovered 20 transformers at their instance.
The accused had been identified as Sukhwinder Singh, Jatinder Singh, Puran Chand, Bir Singh lakhi and Sandip Singh.
He said the gang was carrying out its activities in the districts of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Kapurthala, Jagraon and Amritsar since 2009 and was involved in the theft of more than 1000 transformers.
The police also seized three pistols and seven live cartridges. The gang used to remove four to five transformers and cables removed from these transformers were sold to scrap dealers on throwaway prices.
Members of the gang had killed an unknown person near Garhi Bakhsh in the month of March this year after he had identified them and had dared to ask them about their movements in the night.
The gang had also robbed the rifles of security guards of a godown at Bagha Purana in 2009, the SSP added. He said the scrap dealers who purchased the stolen goods from the gang had been identified also and will be apprehended soon.
