The Election Commission of India (ECI) today expressed satisfaction over the poll preparations by the election machinery in Gujarat for the two-phase Assembly elections in December.
Addressing a news conference here this evening, Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath said that the election machinery in the state has done a commendable job in revising the electoral rolls.
As of now there are 3.5 crore voters in the state, he said.
He said that during the first phase of the poll preparations, the emphasis was on the enrolment of the voters and now the emphasis would be on the participation of the voters in the election process.
The Election Commission, which was present in its full strength, had review meetings with the senior officials of the state including the collectors, police officers and others.
The commission also had meeting with the state DGP and the chief secretary with whom it reviewed the various aspects of the poll preparations.
The commission met the representatives of political parties.
Some parties made complaints about the neutrality of some of the officers. They also complained about the harassment of the people during the expenditure-monitoring exercise.
Mr Sampath said that the Commission has asked all the officials to discharge their duties impartially and fearlessly. He asked them to be transparent and warned that their conduct would be on constant watch of the Commission.
