Women outfits hail conviction of rape accused
The different constituents of women and people's struggles have hailed the conviction of accused in the 15-year-old infamous JC Bose Hostel gang rape case.
'The organisations are extremely pleased today with the conviction of the accused in this gang rape case by a district court in Jaipur,' PUCL General Secretary Kavita Srivastava and a number of activists said in a joint statement here.
'It took more than 15 years for the complainant girl to be vindicated, despite the delay by the judiciary we hail this as a historic decision in a gang rape case,' they said.
The victim girl had broken her silence after seven years of sexual exploitation that day on September 5, 1997, when in broad daylight at 12 noon she was gang raped in temple of learning called the University.
This brutal act shocked all and there was a large support of citizens who rallied around her for justice, the statement further stated.
'Today the girl, the family and the struggle all stand vindicated. Although some of the accused were given the benefit of doubt and were let off, however, the complainant will appeal against their acquittal in the High Court,' they concluded.
