Sudrak Natya Utsav held to revive theatre

Bengali litterateur Nabanita Dev Sen Friday inaugurated the Sudrak Natya Utsav 2012 held at Lady Ranu Mukherjee Auditorium, Academy of Fine Arts.

Present on the occasion were theatre personality Rudra Prasad Sengupta, sculptor and painter Sanat Kar, Bibhas Chakrabarty, and Mrinal Ghosh.

Some eminent theater personalities were felicitated with Sudrak Samman 2012 for contribution to the theatre and keeping it alive till date.

The inaugural function of Sudrak Natya Utsav got life with the performance of Draupadi directed by Heisnam Kanhailal from the Kalakshetra Group and in the role of Draupadi, Manipuri actress Savitra Devi got critical acclaim.

Theatre actor Shantilal Mukherjee said: "Theatre needs a very good amount of time to rehearse, which is not a matter of joke and apart from this remuneration should be made worthy."

Mukherjee added, "Where Savitri Devi has taken the theatre today, it definitely needed a lot of dedication; they would never be successful to reach such a commendable position.

The openness and broad mentality infused in the role by Savitri Devi made the audience applaud while there was a standing ovation for the team's work of acting and direction for Draupadi.
