New Delhi, Mar 12 : India's missile programme received a blow on Tuesday as the trial of country's first indigenously developed long range cruise missile Nirbhay was terminated halfway after it deviated from the flight course.

The missile was fired from the Chandipur test range in Odisha at 11:50 am.

In a statement, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) spokesman Ravi Kumar Gupta said: "Long range cruise missile Nirbhay was successfully launched today at 1150 hrs from launch complex, Chandipur, Odisha, meeting the basic mission objectives successfully."

"After travelling approximately midway, deviations were observed from its intended course. Further, flight was terminated to ensure coastal safety," Gupta said.
