Tihar Jail's fashion show for women inmates
New Delhi, March 7 : The women inmates of Tihar Jail here are set to walk the ramp as part of a fashion show planned to celebrate International Women's Day, an official said Thursday.
"The three-hour fashion show will begin around 4 p.m. at the Constitution Club in central Delhi March 9. It will showcase dresses designed by Tihar's women inmates and staff," a jail official told IANS.
The show is being held with the court's permission, the official said, adding that there were 540 women inmates in the jail.
Fashion designing course for the women inmates was launched in the prison in October last year by the national women excellence awardees of Yoga Confederation of India in association with jail authorities and private company Sri Creations.
"It helps in developing the skills of female inmates. The initiative will help them in becoming self-employed or getting jobs after leaving the prison," chairperson of the confederation Laxmi Thakur Singhal told IANS.
Singhal said the fashion designing course in the jail earned the inmates a one-year certificate.
It was launched by Director General (Prisons) Vimla Mehra to enhance the inmates' chances of getting jobs after leaving jail.
The national women excellence award programme is a venture initiated by the Yoga Confederation of India in association with the ministry of development of north eastern region, along with other national and international organisations.
