Man dies of cancer; daughter kills self
Kolkata, Mar 7 : A 20-year-old girl committed suicide on Thursday after her father died of lung cancer at a city hospital.
51-year-old Arup Chakrabarty, a resident of Lake Town, was admitted to AMRI Hospitals at Salt Lake in a critical state on Wednesday afternoon. As his condition deteriorated in the evening, he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The doctors reportedly told the family at 2.30 am on Thursday that he won't be able to survive and it's only a matter of time.
The news of Chakrabarty's death was broken by the hospital authorities to his daughter Srirupa, his wife and 6-7 other family members at 4.35 am.
While his wife fainted on hearing the news and the security guards and doctors rushed to attend her, Srirupa jumped off the sixth floor fire refuse area of the hospital building.
Confirming the news, an official spokesperson of AMRI Hospitals said: "At 4.48 am today morning, the 20 year old daughter of a deceased cancer patient, who passed away early at 4.35am this morning at AMRI Salt Lake, Kolkata, committed suicide by jumping down from the hospital's 6th floor fire refuse area."
"She was pronounced dead at 6.30am."
"Her mother, who collapsed on hearing the news of her husband's death was given first aid assistance. The family & friends of the deceased were present together at the hospital when the news of the cancer patient's death was broken by the hospital authorities at 4.35 am this morning," said the spokesperson.
"The patient was admitted in the Hospital on 6th March, 2013 afternoon in a critical condition and was suffering from cancer. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family," she said.
