Congress wins Assam by-poll
By Hemanta Kumar Nath, Guwahati, Feb 28 : Congress candidate Mandira Roy won the Assam's Algapur assembly constituency defeating her All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) candidate Mehbubul Hasan Laskar by 991 votes, officials said.
In the counting of the Algapur assembly constituency by poll, the Congress candidate received 52791 votes, while AIUDF candidate polled 51880 votes, BJP candidate Sashadhar Pal polled 2742 votes and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate Kamrul Hussain polled 933 votes.
The by-poll of the constituency was held on Feb 24, where 12 candidates including eight Independent candidates were contested.
The by-election in the Algapur assembly constituency was necessitated by the death of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA Sahidul Alam Choudhury on Nov 20, 2012.
