By Hemanta Kumar Nath, Guwahati, Feb 24 : : Nearly 74 percent turnout was recorded as bypolls to Assam's Algapur assembly was held under tight security on Sunday.
"The voter turnout till 5 pm was around 73.82 per cent," an Assam State Election Commission official said.
Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner Dr J Balaji earlier said the total electorate was 1,40,831 strong and the polling took place in a total of 170 polling stations, in which 45 were situated in Cachar district and remaining in Hailakandi district.
At least 12 candidates of different political parties were in the fray in the by poll.
The byelection in Algapur assembly constituency was necessitated by the death of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA Sahidul Alam Choudhury on Nov 20, 2012.
