Guwahati, Feb 24 : : Under tight security polling began in Assam's Algapur assembly by election on Sunday.
At least 11 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in the first two hours of voting in the by poll of the assembly constituency, which began 8 am, officials said.
Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner Dr J Balaji said that, 1,40,831 voters will exercise their franchise in a total 170 polling stations, in which 45 are situated in Cachar district and remained polling booths in Hailakandi district.
At least 12 candidates of different political parties are in fray in the by poll.
The by election in Algapur assembly constituency was necessitated by the death of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA Sahidul Alam Choudhury on Nov 20, 2012.
