Social activists meet to organize campaign for gender sensitization
New Delhi, Feb. 13 : Several social activists belonging to different non-governmental organizations (NGOs), educational institutions and particularly women's rights groups, gathered here on Wednesday to herald a worldwide campaign for gender sensitization under the banner of 'One Billion Rising'.
Stressing on the need to curb atrocities against women all over the world and appreciating the role of media in spreading awareness about gender equality, Kamla Bhasin, coordinator of the 'One Billion Rising' from South Asia, said: " This is a movement by all sectors, all kinds of people including women from Dalit and Muslims communities all other oppressed sections in the world.
"The country will be rising with men who love and respect women and with children who love and respect women," she added.
Over 200 countries are participating in the campaign and around 7000 awareness events are planned across the world to stop violence against women.
Initiatives to stop crime against women in India increased after the barbaric Delhi gangrape case of a 23-year-old girl, which generated a nationwide public outcry and protests.
In the background of these issues, the social activists wished that the Central and state governments would do more to improve gender equality.
