Tri City Mega Mock Exercise on Earthquake to be held
Shimla, Feb 12 : The Tri-City Mega Mock Exercise on Earthquake would be held simultaneously at Shimla, Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali tomorrow.
It would be jointly conducted by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and State Governments of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.
Disclosing this here today Brig (retd) Dr B K Khanna, Senior Consultant with NDMA said the entire State of Himachal falls in Zone V and is extremely vulnerable to earthquake and other natural hazards.
While quoting a study by IIT Mumbai and IIT Madras based on the analogy of the great earthquake of 1905 in Kangra, Brig Khanna said if ever an earthquake occurs in the hill State again, its Centre would fall between Sundernagar and Mandi. With a depth of 15 km the rupture would go upto 200 km and its intensity would be 8 to 10 on the Richter scale. The effect of earthquake could go upto Delhi and the congested townships in the hill State would be most affected.
Talking about casualties, he said there could be at least 3.4 per cent deaths and 17 per cent injuries in a population of 8.14 lakh of Shimla district alone if tremors of maximum intensity happen at night. At the State level, in a population of 68.6 lakhs, the losses can go upto 2.3 per cent deaths and 16 per cent injuries.
The identified locations for the mock drill in Shimla tomorrow will be Deputy Commissioner's Office, all major hospitals, key hotels, main schools, colleges and Himachal University.
Huge structures like the State High Court, Himachal Secretariat, Public Lifts, Doordarshan and Radio Stations and various thickly populated localities like Sanjauli, Cemetery, Krishna Nagar and Kusumpati.
An Information Dissemination Committee, including nine other committees has been constituted to become a part of Research and evacuation team, said the officials.
