Saved from gallows in UAE, 17 Punjabi youths arrive home
Amtritsar, Feb 12 : All the 17 Punjabi youths, who had been saved from the gallows in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a murder case, arrived here this evening.
Accompanied by NRI hotelier and philanthropist S P Singh Oberoi, who played a big role in getting them released from various jails in the UAE, they paid obeisance at the Golden Temple here.
The youths were sentenced to death for killing Pakistan national Misri Khan in the UAE. After their conviction, the case had gone to the appeal court where five lawyers were appointed by the Indian government to plead their case. During a hearing, a representative of Misri Khan's family informed that the family of the deceased was ready for a compromise.
Mr Oberoi paid Pakistani Rs eight crore to the family of the deceased Pak national as 'blood money' to secure the release of the youths.
