UHBVN detects 25,630 cases of pilferage of power

Chandigarh, Feb 12 : Intensifying its campaign to curb theft of power, the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) officials detected 25,630 cases of pilferage of power upto January during the current fiscal.

A UHBVN spokesman said here today that the Nigam imposed penalty of Rs 61 crore and 88 lakh on the erring consumers and recovered Rs 33 crore 10 lakh from them. In as many as 298 cases, the FIRs had been lodged with the police.

He said in most of the cases, the erring consumers were found stealing power through direct connections, meter bye pass, tampering the meter or by managing fake meter seals.

The electricity meters of 26933 consumers were found defective during the checking and 25707 had been replaced.

The spokesman also said that in order to minimise theft of electricity, the Nigam had planned to arrange special camps in villages to release on the spot connections to domestic category consumers. It had been decided to arrange two camps in each operation sub division in a month, he added.
