Maxwell, Henriques and Smith in tussle for Oz No. 7 batting slot
Sydney, Feb 11 : Australian cricketers Glenn Maxwell, Moises Henriques and Steve Smith would be given a potential opportunity for the No. 7 batting slot, following the retirement of Michael Hussey and vice-captain Shane Watson's decision to play only as a batsman in the first Test against India.
According to opening batsman Ed Cowan, this is an opportunity for the three players to score runs and take wickets, but said that there is no clear standout among any of the three, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Adding that there is a need for an all-rounder following Watson's decision, Cowan said that it is to be decided whether there is a need for a spinning all-rounder or a medium-pace all-rounder, depending upon the conditions and the form of the players.
However, Cowan says that Henriques, Smith and Maxwell, who have international experience in limited-overs cricket, are all talented players but they lack consistency, although he added that the trio is young and is expected to perform better.
Maxwell is the highest-profile player of the trio after landing a 1 million dollar deal at the Indian Premier League auction a week ago when he was snapped up by Mumbai Indians.
