Indian tourists increase in Australia
New Delhi, Feb 11 : Tourism Australia on Monday announced that 1,59,420 of the 6.1 million international arrivals in 2012 were Indian visitors. This is a 7.5pc increase from 2011 arrivals. Of these visitors, 58,120 travelled to visit family and friends, 31,120 travelled for leisure holidays, 28,860 travelled for business and 13,370 travelled for education. Indian visitors spent an average of 62 nights and AUDUSD 5,008 making India Australia's 10th largest inbound market for arrivals and 11th largest source market in terms of expenditure and accounted for 3 per cent of all international expenditure.
Total International Visitor Arrivals to Australia:
There were 6.1 million visitor arrivals for year ending December 2012, an increase of 4.6 per cent relative to the previous year.
There were 720,380 visitor arrivals during December 2012, an increase of 7.1 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.
Indian Visitor Arrivals to Australia
There were 22,440 visitors from India during December 2012, an increase of 39.4 percent relative to the same month previous year.
The total for year ending December 2012 is 159,420, an increase of 7.5 percent relative to same period in 2011.
This makes India the 10th largest inbound market for arrivals as at December 2012.In the year ending December 2012, a high proportion of Indian visitors visited Australia for leisure (89,240). Other visitors visited for business (28,860), education (13,370), and other purposes (27,950). Leisure visitors are travellers on holiday (31,120) or visiting friends and relatives (58,120).
Arrivals from India are expected to perform well, with an average annual financial year growth rate of 7.1 per cent through to the financial year 2020-21.
For 12 months ending September 2012, Indian visitors contributed AUSD 716 million to Australia's total expenditure.
India is the 11th largest source market in terms of expenditure and accounted for 3 per cent of all international expenditure.
Average expenditure for Indian visitors was AUSD 5,008.
Duration of Stay:
For 12 months ending September 2012, Indian visitors spent a total of 8.9 million nights in Australia.
The average length of stay for all visitors from India was 62 nights, much higher than Global average of 36 nights.
Indian leisure visitors stayed an average of 52 nights.

Australia's overnight visitor spend has the potential to reach between USD 115 billion to USD 140 billion by 2020.
India's overnight visitor spend has the potential to reach between USD 1.8 billion to USD 2.2 billion.
Visitor numbers from India have the potential to reach upto 300,000.
