Kolkata, Feb 7 : West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan on Thursday handed over medals to 35 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, including nine girl cadets, at a ceremony held at the Marble Hall of Raj Bhawan here.

The proficiency medals are given annually to the 'best cadets' of the three wings of NCC from the West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate, as well as for distinctive achievements in the field of adventure and gallantry.

Among the cadets who received medals included, Cadet Bhupender Kumar Singh, who was adjudged the 'Best Air Force Cadet' at the just concluded Republic Day NCC Camp held in New Delhi.

Five others, Cadets Jayanta Kundu, Nagma Khatun, Pintoo Malick, Bilam Mahto and Manoj Nayak, who won individual medals including two gold medals at the Mavalankar Shooting competition, held at New Delhi in November 2012, were also felicitated.

Junior Under Officer (JUO) Abhishek Singh from 19 Bengal Battalion NCC, Kolkata received the 'Bravery Award' for gallantry from
the Governor.

Cadet Abhishek was at home on July 13, 2012 near Howrah district of the state when he saw smoke billowing in the neighbourhood. A warehouse was under fire and workers were trapped inside it.

A few fire tenders were pressed into operation.

Unmindful of the risks, he climbed a pipe and rescued two workers single-handedly.
