Former wife helping Gascoigne 'beat his booze demons'
London, Feb 6: England football legend Paul Gascoigne, who has been checked into an alcohol rehabilitation clinic, has been reaching out to his former wife Sheryl for help on a daily basis as he battles to beat the booze.
The scale of his problem was revealed last night when Gascoigne was said to have slipped his minder at a US airport for one last beer, the Daily Mirror reports.
The minder managed to take the pint off him and escorted him to the clinic.
The frail ex-footballer is now in an Arizona clinic after pals including Chris Evans and Gary Lineker clubbed together to fund his return to rehab.
Sheryl has also been doing her best to support Gascoigne over the past few weeks, despite their strained relationship in recent years after they split in 1998, the paper said.
Sheryl's behind-the-scenes efforts were revealed after Gascoigne's stepdaughter Bianca began to get abuse from some football fans, saying she and her mum used Gazza's name but did nothing to help him.
Model Bianca replied that her mother talks to Gascoigne hours on end every day, helping and speaking to the people around him trying to do the best for him.
Gazza's old footballing pal Lineker also used Twitter to respond to fans that praised his intervention to help his ex-England teammate.
