Digvijay Singh takes on Vijay Shah, says 'MP Govt. not responsible for anything'
New Delhi, Feb. 5 : Taking potshots at Madhya Pradesh Tribal Development Minister Vijay Shah over his remark that protecting girls is the responsibility of the parents and not the government, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Tuesday said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government in the state is not responsible for anything, and this is their working style.
"If we listen to what they say, then the present BJP Government (in Madhya Pradesh) is not responsible for anything. People may die or commit suicide and the government is grossed deep in corruption this is the BJP's work culture," he told media here.
Shah earlier told girls seeking a hostel facility in Alirajpur that their parents will have to give a written undertaking easing the government of the burden to protect them.
"If the families can guarantee the safety of their own children then we can give a provision of the hostels. Even we want our sisters to study," he said, when the girls approached him seeking hostel facility at an ABVP function on Sunday.
National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma has also condemned Shah's statement.
"State and the government alone cannot protect girls. He should resign as women were voters too," she said.
Shah has joined the growing list of politicians who have made derogatory remarks against women.
Earlier in January, Madhya Pradesh Industry Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya's statement that women, who breach their moral limits deserve punishment, had caused a major embarrassment for the BJP.
Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh and President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee had earlier joined the list of politicians who had cast aspersions on the character of victims of sexual harassment.
