Assam villagers kill tiger
By Hemanta Kumar Nath, Guwahati, Feb 5 : : A tiger was killed by villagers in Lower Assam's Dhubri district on Tuesday after it attacked and injured three members of a family, officials said.
The incident took place at Choraikhola area in the district on Tuesday morning, where villagers killed the tiger.
"The tiger attacked and injuring three people of a family, when they were busy in their paddy field," a police official said.
After the incident, villagers gathered and killed the big cat.
The injured persons Haren Rai, Gopal Rai and Jaton Rai were rushed to local hospital.
Recently, a leopard was killed by villagers at Ouguri Shyam village in Borhat forest range of Sivasagar district on Jan 19.
According to Union Forest and Environment Ministry report, 78 tigers died in the year 2012, where 50 had been poached.
According to the 2010 tiger census, there are 1,706 tigers left in India, of which 143 were counted in Assam.
