New York, Feb 4 : The top United Nations envoy in Iraq has strongly condemned the coordinated attacks on the police headquarters in the northern city of Kirkuk Sunday that killed dozens of people and injured many more.
"My thoughts are with the families of the victims, with the people of Kirkuk who, once again, are the victims of mindless and brutal violence. The perpetrators show a complete disregard for human life," said Martin Kobler, the Secretary-General's Special Representative and head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
At least 16 people were reportedly killed as suicide bombers and gunmen attacked the headquarters early this morning.
"It is important that the people of Kirkuk remain united against the forces of extremism and hatred," stressed Kobler.
"I urge the Iraqi leadership to take all necessary steps that are required to deal with this alarming situation, particularly in Kirkuk, the symbol of peaceful coexistence in Iraq," he added.
Kobler extended his deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes for a speedy recovery to the wounded, which, according to media reports, are said to number at least 90.
