Govt has betrayed us on Lokpal: Anna
New Delhi, Feb 1 : A day after the Union Cabinet cleared some key amendments in anti-corruption Lokpal Bill, veteran social activist Anna Hazare on Friday continued criticising the government and said it has 'betrayed' the people on the issue.
"The government has betrayed us," Anna said while addressing a press conference on Friday.
Anna trashed the new Lokpal Bill and said: "What is the meaning of this Lokpal if it does not ensure justice for the poor?"
"What is going to happen to the country if the government tells such lies and changes its stands," Anna said.
He said the country will not get a good Lokpal until 'good people go to the Parliament'.
Anna said he has written a letter to Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asking to bring the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) under the Lokpal to make it effective to check corruption.
Meanwhile, key Anna Hazare group member Kiran Bedi has supported the latest Union Cabinet's clearance of some key amendments in Lokpal Bill.
While the critics slammed the government for still making the CBI director susceptible to political influence, Bedi said the selection of the director of CBI is considerably corrected.
She said the selection by a three-member committee is better.
"It has a fixed tenure of two years. Any case of corruption referred to CBI will not be under the government or politicians and that is good," Kiran Bedi is quoted in media saying.
Bedi tweeted: "If Select Committee Recommendations on Lokpal r [are] cleared by Cabinet then it's a beginning made. It's an improvement over earlier Standing Committee."
The Union Cabinet has approved the proposals submitted by the Department of Personnel and Training for moving official amendments to the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011 on Thursday as reported by the Select Committee of Rajya Sabha.
The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011 was passed by the Lok Sabha on Dec 27, 2011.
