Guwahati, Jan 29 : After two rhinos were poached and the horns removed in Kaziranga National Park within 24 hours, the Assam government today claimed that wildlife conservation in the state has been overall successful

A second dead rhino was found inside the Park this morning, with bullet marks and the horn missing

Another rhino was poached and its horn removed in the KNP yesterday, in the latest series of frequent rhino poaching incidents inside this UNESCO World heritage site

Poachers had also dehorned alive rhinos after injuring them in more than one incident in the KNP last year

The state government, facing severe criticism, today said, ' While there have been incidents of poaching, wildlife conservation in the state on the whole has been successful.' In a statement, the government said it was concerned over the incidents of rhino poaching in KNP and other places in the state and views the frequency of poaching incidents as a conspiracy of certain forces with vested interest

The alleged nexus of some insurgent elements with poachers would also be probed into, the statement added

The state government has already moved the Centre to institute an enquiry by the CBI to unearth any such conspiracy

Meanwhile, CID has taken over the investigation of 7 cases related to rhino poaching and another 4 cases are being supervised by the CID

During investigation by CID /District Police personnel, a number of accused/ suspects have been arrested and weapons recovered which are suspected to have been used in committing the crimes, the statement said, adding that a few horns have also been recovered
