Brazil fire: Club owners, band members detained
Police here detained the two owners of the club and two members of a band performing there for questioning in the case of a fire on Sunday that killed 231 people, said reports.
The fire, which apparently caught from a pyrotechnics show being conducted by the band, spread within minutes and killed a large number of people inside the popular Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria.
Police are yet to file charges against them.
Asphyxiation and smoke inhalation appeared to be the most common cause of death while several people were also trampled in the scurry leave the club where the fire started at around 2am.
Brazil President Dilma Rousseff, who cut short a visit to Chile to fly to the scene of the disaster on Sunday, said: "The pain I saw in Santa Maria was indescribable."
"Faced with this tragedy, it is our duty to make sure it never happens again," she added.
Brazil is set to host the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and 2016 Olympics. The world will be watching what the country does to improve its safety standards and emergency response capabilities.
