Amendment to Goa Lokayukta Bill tabled in assembly
The Goa Lokayukta (First Amendment) Bill 2013 was tabled on the first day of the winter session of the Goa Legislative Assembly on Monday.
The Bill seeks fine upto Rs one lakh and imprisonment to a maximum three years for filing false complaints.
The newly introduced Bill also seeks to extend the three year term of Lokayukta or Upa-Lokayukta to five years, and allow appointment of a retired Judge of the Supreme Court as a Lokayukta or Upa-Lokayukta which the present Act restricts to a Judge of High Court or who is qualified to be Judge of High Court.
The government recently recommended Supreme Court Justice (Retd) B Sudarshan Reddy as the first Lokayukta of Goa. The recommendation has been forwarded to the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
Earlier, Goa Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo, during his inaugural address in the assembly assured to make Lokayukta fully-functional by March-end.
BJP, in the March 2012 election campaign had promised to set up office of Lokayukta in Goa within 100 days of it coming to power.
