Brazil nightclub fire kills 245
At least 245 people were killed when a fire swept through a popular nightclub in southern Brazil on Sunday, state media said, citing officials.
Hundreds are believed to have been injured while the number of casualties could rise as firefighters and rescuers continue to pull out bodies from the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria, media reports said
Asphyxiation and smoke inhalation appeared to be the most common cause of death while several people were also trampled in the scurry leave the club where the fire started at around 2 pm.
A tearful Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff spoke to reporters in Chile, where she has been attending a regional summit, and said she was heading to Santa Maria later Sunday.
"The Brazilian people are the ones who need me today. I want to tell the people of Santa Maria in this time of sadness that we are all together," she said.
A pyrotechnics show could be the possible cause for the fire, even though authorities said the scene was still under investigation.
