As many as 55,914 children up to the age of five years were administered polio drops under the first phase of the pulse polio campaign in Una district of Himachal Pradesh.
Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam has administered the drops to the children, while launching the campaign in a slum area here yesterday.
On the occasion, the Rotary Club also set up a special polio booth at leprosy ashram Himotkars to ensure that every children be given the vaccine. Special arrangements were made to administer the vaccine to the children of workers in industrial sectors.
Under the campaign, 364 booths -- 346 in rural areas and 18 in urban areas -- had been set up. Besides this, 22 mobile booths were also pressed into the service.
Mr Kadam said to realise the vision of a polio-free world, the collective efforts and public awareness were essential.
With public participation and awareness, the campaign can be successful.
The second phase will be launched on February 24 this year.
