Only Congress understands people's aspirations: Manmohan Singh
Echoing Congress president Sonia Gandhi's sentiments about the way forward for the party in the run-up to the 2014 general elections, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said the three-day-long Chintan Shivir held here, would provide a new direction.
Addressing the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting, Singh specifically emphasised that the youth of the country have high aspirations and the UPA Government would take all concrete steps to fulfil them.
"I believe that this 'Chintan Shivir' provide the Congress Party a new direction. We need to project the government's work properly among the people and accept our failures. We especially need to reassure our youth that we understand their aspirations and will take concrete steps to meet them. We have largely fulfilled the promises made during the elections in 2004 and 2009," said Dr. Singh.
"We have been more careful about the people from the backward areas than any other governments. We have been particularly focused on the poor and underprivileged people. We have given more emphasis on agriculture and health and education in the rural areas.
During NDA regime agricultural growth rate was three percent and we have brought to 3.7 percent. The country's development under NDA was 5.5 percent. Under UPA, the GDP grew over 8 percent," he added.
Dr Singh further revealed that the country's GDP has become third largest in the world after the United States of America and China. On the basis of development, the nation has received throughout the previous two decades, India will be among the middle income group nations till 2030, he said.
"Our achievements will completely change the lives of common people till 2030. The benefits of growth can be seen in the growth of per capita rural consumption. Our growth has slowed down of late but it's still far better than in other countries," said Dr. Singh.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that there is a long way to go and work hard to gain the goals that had been determined through the Chitan Shivir.
