Congress president Sonia Gandhi said she was happy to see the large number of youngsters taking part in the party's brainstorming session here.
Speaking at a meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) here on Sunday, she said, "I am particularly delighted with the active participation of so many of our younger colleagues at the Chintan Shivir."
"Engaging the youth more centrally in our organisation is unnecessary," she said, adding that it was the only way to develop and project new leadership.
Sonia spoke on a range of issues ranging from corruption to women's security.
Rahul Gandhi is expected to make his first speech as Congress vice-president at the same meeting on Sunday.
The Gandhi scion was named the vice-president of the 128-year-old party on Saturday.
