International kite festival takes off in Gujarat's Somnath area
A large number of enthusiasts from across the world gathered in Somnath, Gujarat, to take part in the International Kite Festival.
The annual kite flying festival, which marks the start of spring, involved aerial duels in which participants tried to bring down each other's kites using string coated in a sticky paste of ground-up glass or metal.
The festival coincides with Uttarayan, the country's largest kite festival, during which the entire city takes to the rooftops.
A kite enthusiast, Pooja, said: "I am feeling very happy that different different countries are here to participate for this loving kite festival and they are showing keen interest to be here as a participant and they are also appreciating the food, the culture and our hospitality."
"We are glad that other people are coming over here for different festivals also. They are enjoying much. We are also enjoying that the festival is coming over here in our compound and we have got the opportunity to host this festival," she added.
Britisher Paul said: "I have come to Gujarat to show my interest and my passion for kites with the good citizens of Gujarat state. We have had a wonderful time. I have been to three festivals so far and here on the coast, Somnath, is absolutely wonderful."
The tourism industry in the state is expected to benefit from the number of visitors coming from abroad to take part in the event.
