Congress supporters were arrested after led by Union Minister Deepa Dasmunshi on Thursday they marched towards the West Bengal state secretariat Writers' Buildings demanding the setting up of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMSs) hospital at Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur district.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier said that she would not acquire land by force for an AIIMS hospital in Raiganj, an area represented by Deepa Dasmunshi in Parliament.
The Congress leader and union minister demanded that land be made available for the AIIMS project there and accused the chief minister of blocking the project.
Three processions from three points marched towards Writers' Buildings.
Senior Congress leaders and MPs like Abhijit Mukherjee, Pradip Bhattacharjee and Manas Bhuniyan also led the processions.
Police, however, blocked the processions at various points and also arrested at least 30 Congress workers who had reached near the state secretariat. They were later released.
Deepa Dasmunshi lambasted the state government for "playing politics" over development.
"We as Bengali are hanging our head in shame," she said referring to politics over development and law and order situation in West Bengal.
The protest by Congress created massive traffic snarls in the city.
