The Odisha Police on Saturday said they have recovered the half-burnt body of an unidentified girl at Puri district.
The body was found beside the Haripur-Balanga canal in the district on Friday, the police said.
Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) Anup Sahul said residents of Samarai Sasan village informed the police after they found the body that was dressed in a black salwar and had mehendi marks on her palms.
Speaking to reporters, Sahul said: "We have recovered the half-burnt body of a girl aged about 20 years. Her identity is yet to be ascertained."
Sahul said half of the victim's face was burnt but she had no burn injuries on her legs and hands.
"The details will be known after we get the post-mortem report from the district headquarters hospital," he said when asked whether it was a case of rape.
The matter was investigated by a dog squad and scientific teams from Puri, the police said.
The police said they have recovered some liquor bottles from a half-built house located near the canal.
