Rape victim suicides after police apathy
A 17-year-old girl from a village near Patiala who had been raped by two men has committed suicide after the police allegedly taunted her and refused to register a case for over a month, media reports said Thursday.
The girl, who was sexually assaulted on Diwali by two men, in her suicide note stated that she has been harassed and was scared.
She took her life by drinking poison and was declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital on Wednesday, just days after speaking to local media about her ordeal.
The family of the girl, who had approached the police despite being threatened by the rapists, said local cops asked her obscene questions when she went to file a complaint.
"The police started pressuring her to either reach a financial settlement with her attackers or marry one of them," the victim's sister said told a TV news channel.
The police have finally arrested the two men, who hail from the same village, and also a woman who purportedly helped them.
The state government has dismissed SHO Gurcharan Singh and suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector Nasic Singh of the police station.
The incident comes as protests in New Delhi and other parts of India continue to rage over the brutal gang-rape of a woman on a moving bus in the national capital.
