Kolkata experiences 'coldest day'
Kolkatans experienced the coldest day of the year today with mercury dipping to 11.5 degrees Celsius as temperature plummeted in many parts of the state.
Alipore MET office predicted that the mercury might further slide, specially in south Bengal, as the day progressed with northerly winds sweeping across the state.
The temperature of the city this morning was 11.5 degrees, 2.5 degrees below normal.
Five districts --Bankura, Birbhum, Purulia, Bardhaman and West Midnapore--have been alerted about cold wave condition as Malda, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in north Bengal were also reeling under severe cold with mercury hovering between 8 to 10 degrees.
In the morning, dense fog also disrupted traffic on roads and rails while some flights from the NSCBI airport were delayed because of poor visibility.
