Fifty seven out of the 182 newly-elected members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, have criminal records against them.
According to a report by the Gujarat Election Watch (GEW) based on an analysis of the affidavits of the new MLAs, 57 have declared that they have criminal cases against them.
In 2007 Assembly elections, 47 MLAs or 26 per cent had declared criminal cases against them.
The report which was released here yesterday, said charges have been framed against 35 MLAs for various crimes, out of which 24 face serious criminal cases against them.
The MLAs facing criminal charges include BJP bigwigs like Amit Shah (Naranpura), Chaudhary Shankarbhai Lagdhirbhai (Vav) and Jethabhai G Bharwad (BJP-Shehra).
Vasava Chhotubhai Amarsinh of JD (U) (Jhagadia (ST)) has the maximum number of charges (dacoity, theft and murder) framed against him.
Shah was arrested and jailed in gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case of 2005 and is also an accused in Tulsi Prajapati encounter case of 2006.
Bharwad was detained in connection with a firing incident on the day of polling-December 13. Later, he gave a slip to police and now he has been barred by a Godhra court to enter his constituency till the court announces its verdict on anticipatory bail petition made by him yesterday.
