AK-47 inventor Mikhail Kalashnikov has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a cardiology hospital in the Russian city of Izhevsk.

Reports quoting doctors said the life of the 93-year-old inventor of the world's most popular automatic rifle was not in immediate danger.

His son Viktor told the Russian media that Kalashnikov was just undergoing "routine procedures."

"When I visited him at home last week, he told me that nothing seemed to hurt, but that he simply had no strength left," his personal assistant Nikolai Shklyayev reportedly told RIAN news agency.
