Union Civil Aviation Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Ajit Singh today blamed Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan and BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi for delay in setting up a bench of the Allahabad High Court in western Uttar Pradesh.
"Mr Bachchan, who was a close associate of former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi, opposed the move when he was the MP of Allahabad," Mr Singh told mediapersons during a news conference here.
The RLD leader said that after Mr Bachchan, Dr Joshi, who represented Allahabad, also made all out efforts for the same.
He said due to non setting up of a bench in west UP, people of the region were harried lot and had to spend lot of money for travelling to Allahabad to pursue their cases.
"Allahabad HC is also overloaded with work and there is heavy pendency due to shortage of Judges. Against the requirement of around 160 Judges ,there are just 50," the minister said.
Lawyers of 19 districts of western UP are agitating over the issue for the last five decades and now they are even holding strike one day every week, he added.
RLD is demanding setting up of a bench of the Allahabad High Court in western UP.
