All India Bank strike total success: Venkatachalam
In tune with the one-day nationwide strike call given by the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), along with All India Bank officers Association (AIBOA), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), and National union of Bank Employees (NUBE), about five lakh bank employees and officers observed a protest strike across the country today to press their demands.
The strike was a 'total success', AIBEA General Secretary CH Venkatachalam informed UNI tonight.
He said the associations were protesting against the attempts of the government to hurry up with the Banking Law Amendments, to allow more voting rights to private Corporate/foreign Investors in banks which aimed to increase their influence in the affairs of the Bank, opposing the attempts of bank mergers in the name of functional improvement, opposing schemes to bail out corporate defaulters, stopping licences to corporate houses to start their banks.
"To echo our protest and opposition to these retrograde moves, we have observed the strike today," he said.
He said as per reports reaching from various states, the strike has been a total success and all our members have responded enthusiastically.
Cash transactions in the branches, clearing house operations, money market, government transactions were greatly affected due to the strike.
Employees held rallies everywhere to mark the strike, Mr Venkatachalam said.
