Gujarat win emphatic: Arun Jaitley
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley called the win of Narendra Modi in Gujarat as an emphatic win for the party and a vote for the leadership of Modi and his government's performance.
"Margin of victory indicates it is an emphatic win," said Jaitley speaking to media as counting of votes clearly showed that Modi got a mandate to rule the state for the third consecutive term.
"The win is all the most significant because we had a major spoiler there (he did not name Keshubhai Patel)," said Jaitley.
He said most of the senior leaders of Congress are losing.
On Modi as Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP in 2014, Jaitley said he is a very senior leader in BJP and he is very popular and his views are important.
He said media has the privilege to speculate on Modi's future but it will be decided at right time by party and allies.
Narendra Modi said there is now no looking back for his government.
"No need of looking behind, FORWARD! We want infinite energy, infinite courage, infinite patience," tweeted Modi as results started pouring in, in his favour.
Modi is eyeing to emerge as his party BJP's prime ministerial candidate in 2014 general elections.
BJP is set to gain at least 123 seats of the total 182. The party already won 99 and was leading in 24.
Narendra Modi himself won from the Maninagar seat beating his Congress challenger Shwetha Bhatt, wife of the anti-Modi IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.
Congress on the other hand won 42 and was leading in 13, which is a loss of seven seats compared to last election in 2007.
Modi had campaigned aggressively for the elections, seeking the approval of voters once again while Congress poster boy Rahul Gandhi and party chief Sonia Gandhi had also carried out extensive campaigning.
