As the nation reacted with outrage and prayed for the recovery of the raped and brutalized rape victim of Delhi, reports said the 23-year-old girl who gained consciousness but remain critical said she "wants to live".
"I want to live, mother," she was quoted saying by a relative to TV channel Headlines Today.
She communicated the words by writing in the ICU of Safdarjung Hospital, reports said.
However, her condition is critical and she underwent operation after operation and latest reports said her condition only deteriorated.
Doctors have not yet assured that she would survive. Her abdominal injures and ruptured intestines were a major concern for doctors.
The girl was raped by several men and punched in her stomach and hit on the abdomen. She was hit with iron rod and later thrown off the bus along with her male companion who was also hit with iron rod for trying to prevent the rape and brutalization.
Congress president and chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday night visited in hospital the critically injured victim of a gangrape inside a Delhi bus and demanded strong action against the guilty by writing letters to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
Clamour for death sentence for rapists and security of women gained momentum on Tuesday as a nationwide outrage followed over the gangrape and atrocities on the medical student in a moving Delhi bus Sunday night, even as the national capital's top cop said four arrests, including of the prime accused, were made in a swift action.
Police arrested bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma (who a gym instructor), Pawan Gupta, who is a fruit seller, for the rape and unspeakable brutality on the girl that left her fighting for life.
The suspects were produced in court. Two were produced in a Saket court Wednesday.
A Delhi court on Tuesday remanded Ram Singh, the prime accused in Sunday night's gangrape incident in the national capital, to five-day police custody.
Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said they will take Singh to Rajasthan, Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh in order to nab two other accused.
The father of one of the rapists said his son should be punished if he was found guilty.
Hari Ram Sharma, father of accused Vinay Sharma, told journalists, "Punish him if he has done it."
Hari Ram Sharma and his wife, who live in a south Delhi tenement, said they had no idea when their son returned home on the night of the crime.
Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told the Lok Sabha that the culprits will be punished at the earliest and he would monitor the case himself. He also assured a fast track court trial.
Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said police would ask for death penalty of the rapists before the government.
Speaking on the punishment of the accused, he said: "We will demand death sentence with the government..The police would also demand trial in a fast track court with daily monitoring of the case."
Indian cities witnessed several protests over the issue with women groups hitting the streets along with men to demand strong punishment of rapists and measures to prevent such crimes.
Angry parliamentarians raised the issue in both the Houses of the Parliament on Tuesday.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj once again stirred the debate over death penalty for rapists in Parliament demanding capital punishment for such crimes as the brutal attack echoed in both houses.
