The Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh today said that education among girls should be promoted for the nation to progress.
"Education is an important element that shapes up the lives of the people. Girls should be encouraged to study as it would not only shape up their lives, but also take the nation on the path of development," Mr Yadav said while distributing cheques to 6817 high school pass poor girl students under 'Humari Beti, Uska Kal' scheme on Minorities Rights Day here.
Criticising the previous Mayawati government for misusing funds on installation of busts and construction of parks and memorials, Mr Yadav said the same funds, if had been utilised in right direction, could have changed the lives of the needy.
UP Minority Welfare minister Azam Khan was also present on the occasion. The 'Humari Beti, Uska Kal' scheme aims to provide financial help of Rs 23638.80 lakh to over 75,000 girls.
