A freelance journalist was injured when he tried to stop three men from allegedly molesting a girl at Jalandhar city in Punjab on Monday, the police said on Tuesday.
NDTV reporter Ashwini Malhotra on Monday saw three men allegedly harassing a girl near Bhagat Singh chowk area in the city at around 5 pm.
Malhotra intervened in the matter and tried to stop the men.
While one escaped from the spot, the shopkeepers in the area held the other two people who were harassing the girl.
The man, who escaped from the spot, later returned with a mob of 25 and allegedly attacked the journalist and others who had intervened in the matter, reports said.
"One of the three guys went and brought people with him. The moment they came, they started beating me," Malhotra was quoted as saying.
"At least 20-30 people were there, all of them were drunk," he said.
Malhotra, who is in a hospital, suffered from multiple injuries to his face, hands and legs.
"We are immediately registering a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC against the nine attackers, who are in police custody. The rest of the accused will also be traced and brought to book soon," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Navjot Mahal told Hindustan Times.
