Former West Bengal legislator and CPI leader Sibapada Bhattacharya died at his Netaji Colony residence at Baranagar in North 24 Parganas last night, family sources said.
He was 79 and is survived by wife and a son.
Bhattacharya was suffering from prostrate ailment, the sources said adding he breathed his last late last night.
Bhattacharya became legislator for one term when he was declared winner from Baranagar constituency in the 1972 West Bengal Assembly elections against CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu following collapse of the United Front regime.
Incidentally, Basu declared during the polling that he was withdrawing his candidature from the election protesting mass rigging of the Congress in the polling.
