A humiliating defeat looks imminent for India as they were tottering at 145/6, still trailing by 62 runs, at tea on the penultimate day of the third Test at the Eden Gardens here today.

The hosts started the day on bright note wrapping up the England tail within 30 minutes of day's play. Gautam Gambhir and Virendra Sehwag further boosted the home team's hope by providing the side a brilliant start. The duo put up a 86-run stand for the first wicket.

Things took a nasty turn for India after Graeme Swam cleaned up dangerous looking Sehwag (49) on the first ball after the lunch. Following the right-handler's departure, Indian top order collapsed like nine pins and from 86/0 at one stage India were bleeding at 145/6.

Gambhir (40), Sachin Tendulkar(5) and Mahindra Singh Dhoni(0) perished in near identical fashion, fishing the ball outside the off stump.

Graeme Swamn and James Anderson were pick of the visiting bowlers picking up two wickets each.

In the Morning session, India took 4.3 overs to clean up remaining four English wickets and restricted England to 523.

Pragyan Ojha got out Graeme Swann in the first over as Sehwag held an easy catch at first slip. Matt Prior edged Zaheer Khan when cutting in the second over. James Anderson played two shots off Zaheer before R Ashwin made him edge one in the fifth over.

Monty Panesar got a rough one next ball, given lbw off Ashwin.

Ashwin finished 3/183 and Pragyan Ojha with highest 4 for 142 runs.
