Food security, employment matters of concern: MK Narayanan
West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan on Friday said food security and employment generation are matters of concern for India.
"Food security is a crucial issue..Employment generation is a matter of concern. Several steps have been taken to overcome the hurdle. However, we need perhaps to step up the pace. We need to give greater impetus to technological and other innovation to give our economy the necessary boost," Narayanan said while addressing a session at the PanIIT Alumni Global Conference that began here on Friday.
He said: "Despite adverse external environment, the fundamental part of our economy has remained strong."
"Two decade of steady economic reforms have contributed to the material improvement all around in average income and consumption levels. All these have been achieved under a functioning secular democracy," he said.
"It proved to the world that democracy works and through the process of democracy can raise the standard of living of the marginalized section of our country," Narayanan said.
The PanIIT Alumni Global conference 2012 started in Kolkata on Friday and will continue till Dec 9.
The PanIIT Alumni Association was formed in 2002 to gather all graduating IITians from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) since 1955 under one umbrella and engage them in initiatives of common interest.
Speaking on IIT, Narayanan said: "The acronym IIT is among the best recognized acronym in the world."
Pertinently, the conference is alternately held in India and the US.
