Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopinath Munde on Sunday backed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the main opposition party's Prime Ministerial candidate for 2014 polls.
The endorsement came a day after senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Saturday said that the Gujarat strongman was the most capable to be the Prime Minister of India.
"Narendra Modi is capable of becoming PM and I am satisfied with Sushma Swaraj's opinion... He has potential of becoming PM," Munde said in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Munde's comment came a day after Swaraj's first open endorsement for Modi during her visit to canvas for the party in Gujarat ahead of the assembly polls.
"There is no two opinion that he is most capable and ideal candidate to be the Prime Minister of India," she said.
The candidature of Modi as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate for 2014 is a debatable issue owing to protests by other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners like Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) , but with Swaraj naming him, the support in favour of Modi only swelled.
Earlier suspended BJP leader Ram Jethmalani spoke in favour of Modi.
"He has done great work in Gujarat," said Swaraj.
Gujarat will vote in two phases on Dec 13 and 17.
According to reports, while Advani will be campaigning across the state for two days from Saturday, Swaraj addressed a rally in Vadodara. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi will tour six places in Saurashtra and southern parts of the state.
The chief minister has also invited Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi to campaign for the BJP in Gujarat.
He will campaign in Anjar and Gandhidham Assembly constituencies in Kutch district, a report said.
