Taking serious note of the misuse of the provisions of the Information Technology Act, the Supreme Court today issued notices to the Centre and four states on a petition seeking directions to the government to scrap section 66A of the IT Act.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice J Chelameswar sought the response of states of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
There was a huge public outcry after the two girls were arrested by Mumbai police for commenting on the Mumbai bandh following the death of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on their Facebook account.
The girls were so terrified after their release on bail, that they deactivated their Facebook accounts.
The Centre has already declared that in future, action will be taken under the IT Act only with the permission of police officers not below the rank of DCP.
