Gujarat polls: IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt's wife to contest against Modi

Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt's wife Shweta Bhatt will contest Gujarat election against Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Congress ticket from Maninagar assembly constituency.

She will file her nomination papers today.

Modi won from Maninagar in 2007 by a huge margin, defeating the Congress candidate.

Gujarat will go to the polls in two phases on December 13 and 17, respectively and the results will be announced on December 20.

Sanjiv Bhatt was suspended after he took on Modi, accusing him of asking the police to go slow on Hindus during the 2002 riots in which more than 1000 people were killed.

He had alleged that he was being persecuted for damaging testimony against Modi.

In March last year, he sent an affidavit to the Supreme Court alleging that at a meeting in February 2002, Modi had told senior policemen not to interfere when rioting mobs were attacking largely-Muslim neighbourhoods.
